It Doesn't Hurt To Try

So F1 qualifying still sucked. I’m still awake and thought it would be a good idea to tweet my idea to every driver that has a verified Twitter account. I also sent it to the Ferrari account. If any team were to at least threaten to pull a stunt like this, it would be them. There’s no way this would actually happen.

Or could it?

If all the drivers did this, what’s Bernie going to do? Cancel the race? That would cost him too much money. A protest in place of qualifying would have already cost him. Advertisers and sponsors would be furious. They’ve got to be pissed enough as it is already. This would have them breathing down Bernie’s neck. They’d be forced to change it back.

But you never know. Two drivers start talking and joking about this dumb tweet they got (that would be my dumb tweet). A few other join in and all of a sudden, the idea doesn’t seem that crazy. They start talking about the logistics and ramifications.

Let’s see what happens when the teams and the FIA all meet up to talk about qualifying. Hopefully, they’ll just go back to the way it was. But if it doesn’t, maybe...

I don't see that happening, the boycott at the USGP in 2005 was due to safety concerns that the teams and drivers had. Driving on tires with a known safety issue is a lot bigger than a complaint about a messed up qualifying system. Plus all it would take is one driver to decide to take advantage of the boycott to get a pole and suddenly the entire thing falls apart. Without 100% of the entire field participating, it will not happen. Getting everyone to agree to boycott qualifying is going to be harder than convincing the FIA that the system sucks.

Technically, it wasn’t a boycott either. The teams were told by Michelin that they could not run. I was at the race. I heard Coulthard on the race scanner on his warm up lap begging to be allowed to run and he was told no.

I was at that race too. The only boycott was going to be from the tires refusing to stay in one piece.

I know that the 2005 USGP was for completely different and fully justified reasons. I was just using it as an example. I know this will never happen, but maybe it should. The teams and drivers all seem to want to go back to the old system, and the FIA isn’t even offering it as an option. Maybe just once, they should form a unified front and take a stand. What’s the FIA and Bernie going to do? Without the drivers, there is no race. Worse case scenario is they all pay a fine which they can all rightly afford.
